Healthcare quality and accreditation — what to look for

Accreditation is the one quality signal an international patient can verify independently, and it is worth understanding rather than taking on trust.

Joint Commission International accreditation involves an external audit of clinical protocols, infection control, medication safety, surgical checklists and patient rights. Fewer than 1% of hospitals worldwide hold it.

Planning the cost properly

The most common mistake in medical travel is budgeting for the operation and nothing else. The hospital package is usually 70 to 85 percent of the true total, and the remainder arrives as a surprise.

A complete budget has four parts: the hospital package, accommodation before and after admission, daily living costs for the patient and attendant, and return flights. The practical logistics section of this guide sets out realistic figures for each.

Because foreign currency must be arranged in advance through your bank, the itemised estimate is not a formality — it tells you precisely how much to organise, in what currency, and by when. Ask for it before you make any other arrangement.

The medical visa process

Turkmen citizens apply for an Indian Medical Visa through the Embassy of India in Ashgabat. The application form is completed online at indianvisaonline.gov.in, then printed and submitted in person at the Consular Wing.

You will need your passport, two recent passport-size photographs, the completed printed form, your medical documents, and the hospital invitation letter and cost estimate. The visa fee is payable in US dollars.

A Medical Attendant Visa is available for family members travelling with the patient and is applied for at the same time. Apply well ahead of your treatment date rather than close to it.

Requirements are set by the Government of India and change periodically. Confirm the current position with the Embassy of India in Ashgabat before applying, and use only the official portal.

What to expect during treatment in India

You are met at the airport and taken to accommodation near the treating hospital. Pre-admission investigations and your first consultation with the specialist happen within the first day or two of arrival.

Most surgeries take place two to five days after arrival, once pre-operative workup is complete. Rooms for international patients are private, and hospitals provide dietary options suited to international patients.

Russian-speaking coordinators and medical interpreters are arranged in advance at the major centres, covering consultations, consent discussions and discharge counselling.

Post-operative care — physiotherapy, wound management, pain control — begins in hospital and continues at your accommodation, with scheduled review appointments before you are cleared to fly.

Kidney transplant — the legal position

Indian law permits organs only from living related donors — parent, sibling, child, spouse or grandparent — with documented proof of relationship. Every case is reviewed by a hospital authorisation committee before surgery proceeds.

Organs cannot be bought or sold in India. Commercial organ trade is a criminal offence and no accredited hospital will source a donor for a patient. Any agent offering to find you a donor is operating illegally and should be reported, not engaged.

Your donor travels with you and undergoes full medical, surgical and psychological assessment before being cleared. Where a child is a potential donor, additional legal protections apply and paediatric donation is tightly restricted.

Recovery, aftercare, and returning home

Recovery timelines vary. Orthopaedic patients usually fly home within 12 to 16 days. IVF cycles take two to three weeks. Cardiac surgery needs around four weeks. Kidney transplant patients should plan six to twelve weeks.

Before departure your treating team prepares a full discharge package — discharge summary, operative notes, pathology, imaging and a medication plan — with Russian translation where needed, for your doctor at home.

For transplant and oncology patients, continuing medication matters as much as the surgery. We check which drugs are available to you at home, and under which brand names, before you fly rather than after you land.

Post-return video consultations with your Indian consultant can be arranged so your surgeon can monitor recovery and adjust prescriptions remotely.
