Estimated cost: $200 – $600 · Average stay: Same day
Colposcopy is the definitive clinical investigation following an abnormal cervical smear or positive HPV test. India's trained colposcopists use high-magnification colposcopes and acetowhite staining to identify and biopsy the most abnormal areas of the cervix — providing precise histological grading of cervical dysplasia and immediate treatment planning.
What Is Colposcopy?
A colposcope is a binocular microscope with bright illumination that magnifies the cervix 6–40 times. After application of acetic acid (3–5%) and Lugol's iodine, abnormal areas of the cervix show characteristic patterns (acetowhitening, punctuation, mosaic, atypical vessels) that guide targeted biopsy. The colposcopy visit includes clinical impression of the cervix, directed biopsy of the most abnormal area, and endocervical curettage if the transformation zone is not fully visible.
Who Needs Colposcopy?
Women referred after an abnormal smear (ASCUS with HPV positivity, LSIL, HSIL, AGC, ASCUS-H), positive high-risk HPV (hrHPV) test on reflex testing, clinical suspicion of cervical pathology (post-coital bleeding, contact bleeding, abnormal-looking cervix), adenocarcinoma in situ, or following inadequate colposcopy at a previous visit.
Colposcopy Procedure at Gaf Healthcare Partner Clinics
The patient is placed in lithotomy position. A speculum is inserted and the cervix visualised. Acetic acid is applied — CIN lesions turn acetowhite. Lugol's iodine is applied — CIN remains iodine-negative. The transformation zone is systematically mapped and the most abnormal area identified for biopsy. 1–4 punch biopsies are taken. Endocervical curettage is performed if the upper limit of the transformation zone cannot be visualised.
Procedure Steps
- Speculum inserted — cervix cleaned with normal saline
- Acetic acid applied — transformation zone inspected
- Lugol's iodine applied — iodine-negative areas identified
- Colposcopic impression recorded (satisfactory/unsatisfactory, normal/abnormal)
- Punch biopsy of most abnormal area(s)
- Endocervical curettage if transformation zone not fully visible
- Monsel's solution haemostasis
- Histopathology result within 48–72 hours

Colposcopy with directed biopsy and histopathology in India costs $200–$600 — available same-day with rapid results, avoiding months of waiting in countries with overburdened healthcare systems.
Recovery & Follow-up
No recovery required. Mild cramping and spotting for 2–5 days. Normal activities resume immediately. Tampons and intercourse avoided for 5 days.
Recovery Tips
- Mild spotting is expected for 3–5 days after biopsy
- Sanitary pads only for 5 days
- Histopathology results reviewed via telemedicine at 48–72 hours
- LLETZ treatment can be arranged at the same hospital within 3–5 days of biopsy results if CIN2/3 is confirmed
Risks & Complications
Colposcopy and cervical biopsy are very safe. Risks include heavy bleeding (<1%), infection (<0.5%), and vasovagal syncope during the procedure.
Why GAF Healthcare
Gaf Healthcare colposcopy clinics are run by accredited colposcopists with subspecialty training. 'See and treat' LLETZ can be performed at the same visit or within 3–5 days of confirmed CIN2/3 histopathology, minimising the number of visits required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is colposcopy the same as a cervical smear?
No. A cervical smear collects cells for cytological analysis. Colposcopy is a clinical examination of the cervix under magnification, with directed biopsy for histological diagnosis. Colposcopy is more accurate than a smear for detecting cervical dysplasia.
Does colposcopy hurt?
Colposcopy itself is painless. Punch biopsy causes brief, moderate cramping for 10–20 seconds — similar to a strong menstrual cramp.
How long before biopsy results are ready?
Histopathology results are available within 48–72 hours at Gaf Healthcare partner hospitals — allowing same-trip results review for most international patients.
What if colposcopy shows CIN3?
CIN3 on biopsy requires treatment with LLETZ. Gaf Healthcare can arrange this within 3–5 days of histopathology confirmation — either in the same hospital visit or a short follow-up appointment.
Can colposcopy detect cervical cancer?
Colposcopy identifies cervical lesions suspicious for cancer. Directed biopsy provides histological confirmation. If invasive cancer is confirmed, Gaf Healthcare immediately coordinates gynaecological oncology review and treatment planning.
