Cervical Cautery (Cervical Erosion Treatment) in India — Cost & Procedure

Cervical cautery in India costs $150–$400. Cryocautery or electrocautery for cervical ectropion (erosion). Quick office procedure. Book with Gaf Healthcare.

Estimated cost: $150 – $400 · Average stay: Same day

Cervical ectropion (often called cervical erosion) is a common benign condition where the columnar epithelium of the cervical canal spreads onto the outer portion of the cervix (ectocervix), causing increased vaginal discharge, post-coital spotting, and contact bleeding. Cervical cautery using cryotherapy, cold coagulation, or electrocautery treats the condition quickly, safely, and effectively in a brief office procedure.

What Is Cervical Cautery?

Cervical cautery destroys the abnormal columnar epithelium on the ectocervix, stimulating regrowth of the normal squamous epithelium (squamous metaplasia). Cryotherapy uses extreme cold (liquid nitrogen or nitrous oxide, –70°C) to freeze and destroy the ectopion tissue. Cold coagulation uses heat (100°C) to achieve the same effect. Electrocautery uses electrical energy. All methods are equally effective — procedure selection depends on the gynaecologist's preference and the extent of ectropion.

Who Needs Cervical Cautery?

Women with symptomatic cervical ectropion causing copious vaginal discharge, recurrent post-coital bleeding, or intermenstrual bleeding who have had a normal cervical smear and colposcopy to exclude CIN are candidates for cautery. Cervical cautery is not performed without first confirming a normal smear result.

Cervical Cautery Procedure in India

A speculum is inserted and the cervix visualised. After confirming a normal smear (or performing one at the same visit), the cryoprobe or electrocautery probe is applied to the ectopion area for 1–2 minutes per application. No anaesthesia is required in most cases. Mild cramping during and for 15–30 minutes after the procedure is common. Discharge resolves within 4–6 weeks as the normal squamous epithelium regrows.

Procedure Steps

  1. Cervical smear performed if not recent
  2. Speculum inserted — ectropion mapped
  3. Cryoprobe, cold coagulator, or electrocautery probe applied
  4. Ectropion area treated for 1–2 minutes
  5. Second freeze-thaw cycle if required (cryotherapy)
  6. Patient rests for 15 minutes post-procedure
  7. Discharge with instructions

Recovery & Follow-up

No recovery period required. A watery, pinkish vaginal discharge for 2–4 weeks is normal and expected. Tampons and sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4 weeks. Return to normal activities immediately.

Recovery Tips

  • Wear sanitary pads for 2–4 weeks for the discharge
  • Avoid sexual intercourse and tampons for 4 weeks
  • A repeat smear at 6 months confirms normal ectocervical healing
  • Contact your gynaecologist if discharge becomes offensive or if fever develops

Risks & Complications

Cervical cautery is extremely safe. Rare risks include infection (<1%), excessive discharge, and treatment failure (10–15% require repeat cautery). There is no evidence that cervical cautery affects cervical smear interpretation in subsequent tests.

Why GAF Healthcare

Gaf Healthcare arranges cervical cautery as a convenient same-day procedure, ensuring colposcopy and smear are performed before treatment to exclude cervical pathology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cervical cautery painful?

Most women feel mild cramping similar to period pain during and briefly after the procedure. No anaesthesia is required. Ibuprofen taken beforehand significantly reduces discomfort.

How long before my symptoms improve?

Discharge and spotting typically improve within 4–6 weeks as the new squamous epithelium grows over the treated area.

Does cervical cautery affect fertility?

No. Cervical cautery treats only the superficial surface of the cervix and does not affect the cervical canal, uterus, or ovaries. Fertility is unaffected.

Can cervical cautery be done during a smear appointment?

Yes. If a smear is performed at the same visit and the gynaecologist confirms it shows no significant abnormality, cautery can be performed at the same appointment.

Can I travel home on the same day?

Yes. Cervical cautery is a quick office procedure with no recovery period. Most patients travel the same day with only a light sanitary pad for comfort.
