Dr. Z S Meharwal

Dr. Z S Meharwal is part of the founding team of doctors at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Okhla, New Delhi, one of India's most respected cardiac centres. With more than 30 years of experience in cardiac surgery and over 30,000 surgeries to his credit — including many of the most complex heart operations performed in the country — he stands as one of the most accomplished cardiothoracic surgeons of his generation.

Dr. Meharwal is a pioneer in many new cardiac operations in India. He is amongst the very few cardiac surgeons in the country performing heart transplantation and ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation — procedures that require exceptional technical skill and institutional support. His ability to handle the highest-risk cases, including patients with poor ventricular function who are often refused surgery elsewhere, has made him a destination surgeon for patients across India and from abroad.

He is the Programme Director of the DNB in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, a role that reflects his deep commitment to training the next generation of cardiac surgeons. He has trained many cardiac surgeons who are now working independently at centres across India and internationally. Dr. Meharwal has been invited extensively as faculty at national and international meetings and has published in peer-reviewed national and international journals.

He is a recipient of the President's Award for his contribution in the field of Cardiac Surgery — one of the highest honours in Indian medicine — and continues to be a reference point for cardiac surgical excellence in North India.
