Cardiac Surgery India: Guide for International Patients
Cardiac surgery India for patients from Oman, Iraq, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia, Europe and Australia. Visa guide, costs, real stories.
Cardiac Surgery for International Patients in India: A Complete 2026 Guide
Somewhere between reading a cardiologist's report and deciding what to do next, most families outside India ask the same question: is this actually possible — getting heart surgery abroad — or is it one of those things that sounds straightforward until you try to do it?
It is straightforward. Every year, patients from Oman, Iraq, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, South Sudan, Zambia, Europe, and Australia come to India for cardiac surgery that would be financially impossible or logistically unreachable at home. The surgery is the same. The hospitals are JCI accredited. The outcomes are equivalent to the USA and UK. The cost is 70–85% lower.

Yes. India's top cardiac hospitals treat patients from over 140 countries annually. All major hospitals have dedicated international patient departments offering visa invitation letters, airport transfers, language coordinators, and telemedicine follow-up. The e-Medical Visa allows entry for medical treatment and is processed in 72 hours for most nationalities. Iraqi nationals are the exception — they must apply in person at the Indian Embassy in Baghdad with biometric capture; allow 5–10 business days. Bypass surgery costs USD 4,500–7,500 at JCI-accredited hospitals — compared to USD 70,000–150,000 in the USA for the surgery alone.
Why Patients From 140 Countries Choose India for Cardiac Surgery
Four reasons matter most: Cost — bypass surgery costs USD 4,500–7,500 in India versus USD 70,000–150,000 in the USA. Quality — India's top hospitals are JCI and NABH accredited with success rates of 95–98%, equivalent to the USA and UK. Volume — Fortis Escorts has performed 80,000+ bypass surgeries; high volume produces consistent outcomes. Speed — most patients are in surgery within 2 weeks of first contact. NHS cardiac waiting lists in the UK run 12–24 months.
The question most patients from Oman, Nigeria, or Australia ask first is not "is the quality good?" They have done enough research to know India's hospitals are genuinely excellent. The real question is: "Is the process manageable when I am unwell and far from home?" The answer is yes — if you have the right coordination.

WhatsApp Us — Tell Us Your Country →Nigeria sends more cardiac patients to India than any other West African country. The community is large enough that most new patients arrive with a phone number from someone they know who went before them. Ethiopian Airlines has the most direct routing from Lagos.
Recommended hospitals: Medanta Gurgaon or Fortis Escorts Delhi. Both have significant experience with Nigerian patients and Hausa or Yoruba interpretation available on request.
Bypass USD 5,500–7,500 · Flights USD 900–1,100 · Accommodation USD 1,000–1,500 · Food USD 600–800 · Visa USD 90. Realistic total: USD 9,500–13,000. Compared to private cardiac surgery in South Africa or UK at USD 40,000–90,000.
For Kenyan patients, Hyderabad is often the better destination over Delhi. Apollo Jubilee Hills Hyderabad has performed 25,000+ CABG procedures, sees over 800 international patients monthly, and offers Swahili language support. Hyderabad costs 15–20% less than Delhi for equivalent procedures at JCI hospitals.
Bypass USD 4,500–6,500 · Flights USD 600–800 · Accommodation USD 900–1,400 · Food USD 550–750 · Visa USD 90. Realistic total: USD 8,000–11,500.
Tanzanian patients share the same recommended pathway as Kenyan patients — Hyderabad over Delhi. Apollo Jubilee Hills Hyderabad's East African patient infrastructure and Hyderabad's lower costs make this the strongest option. NHIF Tanzania does not cover international treatment.
Bypass USD 4,500–6,500 · Flights USD 650–900 · Accommodation USD 900–1,400 · Food USD 550–750 · Visa USD 90. Realistic total: USD 8,000–12,000.
Despite the longer journey — 12–14 hours via Addis Ababa, Dubai, or Doha — the cost savings remain dramatic. Ethiopian Airlines from Accra to Delhi has the most direct routing. NHIS Ghana does not cover international treatment.
Bypass USD 5,500–7,500 · Flights USD 1,100–1,500 · Accommodation USD 1,000–1,500 · Food USD 600–800 · Visa USD 90. Realistic total: USD 10,000–13,500.
South Sudanese patients typically travel to India via Nairobi or Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines from Juba to Delhi via Addis Ababa is the most common routing. Given limited specialist cardiac infrastructure in South Sudan, India is often the only viable option for bypass surgery or valve procedures.
Recommended hospital: Apollo Jubilee Hills Hyderabad (via Addis Ababa routing) or Fortis Escorts Delhi for complex cases. e-Medical Visa — South Sudanese passport holders eligible, 72-hour online processing.
Bypass USD 4,500–7,000 · Flights USD 950–1,350 · Accommodation USD 900–1,400 · Food USD 550–750 · Visa USD 90. Realistic total: USD 8,500–12,500.

Bypass USD 4,500–7,000 · Flights USD 750–1,050 · Accommodation USD 900–1,400 · Food USD 550–750 · Visa USD 90. Realistic total: USD 8,500–12,000.
European patients come for two reasons: cost savings (bypass surgery at USD 5,500–7,500 versus £40,000–90,000 at UK private hospitals) and waiting time (NHS cardiac surgery waiting lists run 12–24 months; India offers surgery within 2 weeks of first contact).
The total India trip including surgery, flights, and 5 weeks accommodation typically costs less than UK private bypass surgery alone. NHS patients on waiting lists of over 12 months may have options for treatment abroad — consult your GP.

Public cardiac surgery waiting times stretch 6–18 months in many Australian states. Private cardiac surgery costs AUD 40,000–100,000. Medicare does not cover treatment abroad. Most Australian patients pay out of pocket.
Bypass USD 5,500–7,500 · Flights USD 1,400–2,100 · Accommodation USD 1,000–1,800 · Food USD 700–1,000 · Visa USD 50. Realistic total: USD 10,500–15,000. Compared to Australian private bypass surgery at AUD 40,000–100,000 (USD 26,000–65,000).

One Patient's Complete Experience — Oman to Delhi and Back
Khalid had been experiencing chest tightness during evening walks for six months. When the tightness happened at rest one Tuesday night, his wife drove him to a hospital in Muscat. The angiogram showed three significant blockages. The private hospital quote in Muscat was OMR 18,000 — approximately USD 46,800.
"My son was studying in the UK. He sent my angiogram to GAF Healthcare that night. The next morning — not three days later, the next morning — I had a cost estimate from Medanta and a clear explanation of why they recommended it."
| Day | What happened |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Angiogram sent to GAF Healthcare from Muscat at 11pm |
| Day 2 | Cost estimate from Medanta received. Surgical package estimate: USD 7,100 |
| Day 3 | Hospital invitation letter received. e-Medical Visa applied for — Khalid and wife |
| Day 5 | Visas approved. Oman Air flights booked Muscat–Delhi. Service apartment confirmed |
| Day 10 | Arrived Delhi IGI Airport. GAF Healthcare driver waiting |
| Day 14 | Triple bypass surgery. 6 hours. Off-pump technique |
| Days 15–17 | ICU. Breathing tube removed day 15. Wife updated daily by GAF coordinator |
| Day 26 | Discharged to service apartment |
| Day 48 | Week-5 follow-up echo. Excellent. Flight clearance given |
| Day 50 | Flew home to Muscat on Oman Air — 3-hour flight ✓ |
"The total we spent — surgery, flights for two, apartment for five weeks, food, visa, everything — was USD 11,200. The quote in Muscat was USD 46,800 for the surgery alone. For Omani families who need cardiac surgery: this option is real, it is accessible, and the journey from Muscat is easier than a flight to Europe."
